Hutton & Smith Brewing Company is a Chattanooga brewery founded by Joel and Melanie Krautstrunk and opened in 2015 on the city’s MLK corridor. Its identity draws heavily from geology: the brewery is named for James Hutton and William “Strata” Smith, two influential figures in the development of modern geology, and that theme carries through many of its beer names and taproom details. Hutton & Smith brews across a broad range of ale and lager styles, with particular attention to water chemistry, rebuilding reverse-osmosis water with mineral additions suited to each recipe. The taproom typically offers a varied selection spanning lighter, hop-forward, malty, dark, sour, nitro, and barrel-aged beers. The space also reflects the brewery’s playful cat-centered personality, while dogs are welcome in the taproom.
